Blog Post #7 - Love, Laughter & Legacy: The Story of Peter & Joan Stonestreet

Some families have a house they orbit around, a place where birthday cakes were baked from scratch, kids climbed fruit trees, and the back gate always squeaked the same way. For the Stonestreets, that place is Springdale.

🌳 The Beginning

In 1924, William Ira (Bill) Stonestreet bought the Springdale property at Barry, New South Wales, Australia.

When his son Peter married Joan Osborne in 1952, Bill passed the property on, and so began a partnership of love, laughter, and long garden days.

Peter and Joan raised five children at Springdale.

They stayed through drought, snow, and tennis court renovations. And somehow, through it all, the kettle was always on.

🧁 The Springdale Way

Springdale became more than a house. It was a:

  • venue for five 21st birthdays, four weddings, and Christmases that spilled into the yard

  • training ground for life skills like “practise your tennis serve” and “don’t let the emu steal your apple pie”

  • place of endless baking, where Joan’s sponge cake and sultana puddings earned family legend status

  • haven where even Father Myers was taught to peel a prawn

The garden was featured in magazines. The shed held gophers, tools, and stories. Even the dogs had personalities and social schedules.

🎾 Scrabble, Sheep, and Showing Up

Peter and Joan weren’t just good parents, they were community powerhouses. Both received Australia Day awards for service. Joan was a flower show president, cake-maker, and unofficial village therapist. Peter helped with the Blayney Show, Barry Hall, the fire brigade, and any event involving a roast lamb and raffle.

And when they weren’t helping others, they were hosting Scrabble smackdowns. Just don’t sit in Peter’s chair or try to out-score Joan with a Z on a double word tile — she would find a triple, every time.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A Growing Legacy

Their children raised their own families nearby, and now grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered at Springdale like swallows returning home.
